Granddaughter;s favorite. September 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I gave three "girl" books to my granddaughter for her 10th birthday this summer. The Big Book of Girl Stuff is far and away her favorite. She has carried it around with all its variant covers, shared it with friends and older cousins and regaled the whole family with facts and funnies--to her delight.
Useful for parents too August 9, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found this book at my daughter's school library and borrowed it for myself. I have browsed portions of this book and I liked it. I am planning to copies for my daughter and my niece... or maybe for myself and my sister so we'd understand our growing girls better. See their world from their point of view and be able to intervene effectively when "girl" problems arise.
Apart from that, it is fun and funny. While clearly my generation is so different from my daughter's there are still parts of the book that bring nostalgia and draw giggles.
And it's also entertaining to peek into their "private", "moms are not allowed" worlds.
The big book of girl stuff ultimate review July 19, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
When I was at the bookstore, this book caught my eye right away. I looked at it, read the back, and that`s all it took to make me read it. As I flipped through the pages, I realized that this was the perfect book for me. I looked at the price . . . NEVER MIND!!! The next few trips at the bookstore I spent reading this book. Then I asked for it for my b-day. I got it! The suggestions were creative, and I could tell this was a, literally, big book of (awesome) girl stuff! I was surprised how MUCH I liked it. It was not for just little 8 year olds, but 8-13 girls.I strongly recommend this book!
It had a large variety of topics that any girl would enjoy. Next time you go to the bookstore, look for this book and read it!
This book was awful! June 19, 2008 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
Me, a 13 year old, read this with my 12 year old friend and the whole time we were LAUGHING. The "cool slang" was terrible, and most of the stuff in there seemed to be aiming towards middle schoolers with the mentality of elementary schoolers. Of course, not everything was bad. But there was just enough of things that made me laugh out loud to make it a bad book. For example, an insult he gives is: "May the ice cubes from a 100 ice trays fill your bra!" Yeah, a good insult if you want to be made fun of even MORE. Also, the section on periods barely touches the surface. Basically it says talk to an adult because they don't know how comfortable people are with that information. Come on, it's The big book of GIRL stuff. You can talk about periods!
Overall, I can't see why this got so many great reviews. That made me literally lol.
A good book to get in a girl's good books! February 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The 8th birthday of my overseas friend's daughter was approaching, so I was facing the ordeal of finding an appropriate (and sendable) gift for a young girl in a different country, hardly having knowledge of current US children's books (nor of children in general, as a matter of fact). I started browsing Amazon and bumped into this book (don't ask me how), and based on the reviews I decided to go for it.
This is what her mom & my friend, wrote to me after its arrival: "She LOVES the book. It's funny because she's a really good reader, but she would still rather have me read chapters to her at night instead of reading silently on her own... but this book is a big exception. It came in the mail on Saturday, and she has spent every night since then (except last night, when she was too partied out to do anything but fall asleep) sitting up in her bed reading like crazy. You picked the exact perfect thing for her (even though it's hard for me to believe that she's already old enough for that sort of thing-- how did this happen?)."
I don't know what EXACTLY is written in this book, but I can tell you, I am really tempted to get a copy myself now!
