Product Description
Saltwater Gamefishing examines all aspects of world saltwater gamefishing both onshore and offshore. Whether you are fishing for giant billfish in deep water oceans or from rocky headlands or angling for lighter gamefish in rivers and estuaries, Saltwater Gamefishing will provide you with all the necessary details of where to find them, how to fish for them and the equipment you will need. All the main species of gamefish are identified, with illustrations and maps showing world distribution. Saltwater Gamefishing also includes information on how to rig bait, troll lures, take a leader, and handle a gaff. It provides advice on suitable rods, reels and tackle, and when and how to use it. There is also vital information on selecting an appropriate boat and dealing with charter boat crews. In addition, the rules of competitive fishing are outlined, as is their importance in world records. Saltwater Gamefishing emphasizes the need for conservation of fish stocks and for the first time provides information on how to capture, tag and release billfish, tuna and other gamefish. Correct techniques for wiring and gaffing fish to allow for successful resuscitation of the released fish are described. Lavishly illustrated with over 120 full color and 100 black and white photographs, Saltwater Gamefishing also includes more than 200 diagrams and illustrations to help identify species and explain technical information.

Who is it aimed at? May 3, 2001 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with this book, despite the rave reviews. It has great photographs, I admit. But I found the structure bad, the writing not terribly informative, and highly repetitive, and the content lacking in hard facts. I have only a year of gamefishing experience, and desperately need help; yet I found alot of information given covered only what I already knew, or what common-sense would tell you anyway. The useful information is repeated endlessly; and the book's text, if well organised, could be edited by half. For example: advice regarding drop-back tchniques are repeated for each fish where dead or live baiting are recommended; and yet the subject is left open, 'some people do this, some people do that'. Infact the whole book is more of a review of what people are doing and where they are doing it. It's all very non-commital, and non-specific. Peter's main interests are Marlin, Tuna, and to a lesser extent, shark. There are a series of a paragraphs covering other species. My main interest is in my local population of sailfish; but when I next go out, I won't be changing much what I already do. It's an attractive book; but if you want good information for your money value; look elsewhere.
Good book, but makes you want more August 26, 1999 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
At 340 pages thick, this book whets the readers appetite, and has sent me on a hunt for more definitive works. Great pictures, in-depth species information, but nothing practical (technique-wise) that you wouldn't find out on a good charter. If you are a marlin fan, this book has been heavily slanted towards you.
very nice April 9, 1999 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read Peter's first book "big fish and blue water" when I was 16 and now I am trying to find a copy to go with " Saltwater Gamefishing" This is a nice book. It is not a fishing manual. It is a book. Some interesting info for people in the pacific rim countries about the rest of the world. A good book to look at when you can't get out on the water
not very educational March 19, 1999 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
The book is poorly organized, so it is difficult to figure out what you need to know to catch a specific fish. Not what I had hoped for, but certainly has nice pictures. More a coffee table book than a useful piece of info.
more of a picture book , than a manual for a fisherman September 18, 1998 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
lots of pictures and diagrams. It does not though go deep into the subject. It covers mostly the marlin showing some nice pics
